Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. The first four terms of a pattern are 2, 4, 6, 8. What is the next term?

    Answer: 10

Each term is 2 more than the one before, so 8 + 2 = 10.

  2. The first four terms of a pattern are 5, 10, 15, 20. What is the next term?

    Answer: 25

Each term is 5 more than the one before, so 20 + 5 = 25.

  3. The first four terms of a pattern are 10, 20, 30, 40. What is the next term?

    Answer: 50

Each term is 10 more than the one before, so 40 + 10 = 50.

  4. The first four terms of a pattern are 20, 17, 14, 11. What is the next term?

    Answer: 8

Each term is 3 less than the one before, so 11 − 3 = 8.

  5. A pattern is 3, 6, 9, 12. What is the rule?

    Answer: add 3 each time

    6 − 3 = 3, 9 − 6 = 3, 12 − 9 = 3, so the rule is add 3 each time.

  6. Count in 4s: 4, 8, 12, 16, ?

    Answer: 20

    Each term is 4 more, so 16 + 4 = 20.

  7. A pattern starts at 1 and adds 2 each time. What is the 6th term?

    Answer: 11

    The 6th term is 1 + 2 × 5 = 11. The pattern is 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11.

  8. The first four odd numbers are 1, 3, 5, 7. What is the next odd number?

    Answer: 9

    Odd numbers go up by 2, so 7 + 2 = 9.

  9. The first four even numbers are 2, 4, 6, 8. What is the 8th even number?

    Answer: 16

    The even numbers are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 — the 8th is 16.

  10. The 5th term of a pattern is 25. The rule is add 5 each time. What is the 1st term?

    Answer: 5

    From the 5th term back to the 1st is 4 jumps of 5: 25 − 20 = 5.
