Answers and explanations for all 10 questions

Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. Which part shown in the diagram above holds the plant firmly in the soil?

    Answer: W

W is the roots. Roots anchor the plant in the soil and take in water.

  2. In the diagram above, which part makes food for the plant?

    Answer: Y

Y is a leaf, and leaves are where a plant makes its food using sunlight.

  3. Which two of these are jobs done by the roots of a plant?

    Answer: A and B only

Roots do two jobs: they anchor the plant and they take in water. Food is made in the leaves, where the light is.

  4. In both set-ups shown above the petals had turned red after a day. What does this show about the stem?

Answer: It carries water up to the rest of the plant.

The red colour reached the petals, so the water must have travelled up through the stem. Carrying water upwards is one of the stem's jobs.

  5. What is the main job of part Z shown in the diagram?

Answer: to make seeds so that new plants can grow

Z is the flower. A flower's job is reproduction: it makes seeds so that new plants can grow.

  6. A gardener covered every leaf of a healthy plant with thick black paper. Which of these would happen?

    Answer: A and B only

Leaves need light to make food. Covering them stops food being made, and a plant with no food weakens and dies. The roots go on gripping the soil either way.

  7. Which pair correctly matches a plant part to its job?

    Answer: leaf — makes food

The leaf is where the plant makes its food, so leaf — makes food is the correct pair.

  8. Look at the part labelled X in the diagram above. What is the name of this part?

    Answer: stem

X is the stem, which holds the plant up and carries water.

  9. Roots have tiny hairs that give them a large surface touching the soil. What do the roots take in from the soil through these hairs?

    Answer: water

Root hairs take in water from the soil.

  10. A plant in a pot was dug up and most of its roots were cut off. It was replanted and watered every day. Why did it still wilt?

Answer: It could no longer take in enough water.

Water only gets into a plant through its roots. With most of the roots cut off, watering the soil does not help, so the plant cannot take in enough water and wilts.
