Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. 3/8 + 2/8 = ?

    Answer: 5/8

3 eighths and 2 more eighths make 5 eighths: 5/8. The denominator stays 8.

  2. 7/9 − 2/9 = ?

    Answer: 5/9

7 ninths take away 2 ninths leaves 5 ninths: 5/9.

  3. Which of these fractions is the largest?

    Answer: 6/7

All four are sevenths, so the one with the most sevenths wins: 6/7.

  4. What is 1/4 of 20 sweets?

    Answer: 5

    A quarter means one of 4 equal parts: 20 ÷ 4 = 5 sweets.

  5. Which fraction is equal to 1/2?

    Answer: 3/6

    Half of 6 is 3, so 3/6 = 1/2.

  6. 2/5 of the pupils in a class are boys. What fraction of the class are girls?

    Answer: 3/5

    The whole class is 5/5, so 5/5 − 2/5 = 3/5 are girls.

  7. 3/8 + ? = 1

    Answer: 5/8

    One whole is 8/8, and 8/8 − 3/8 = 5/8.

  8. Which of these fractions is the smallest?

    Answer: 1/6

The more equal parts a whole is cut into, the smaller each part is — so 1/6 is the smallest.

  9. Ali ate 2/7 of a pizza and Bala ate 3/7 of it. How much of the pizza did they eat altogether?

    Answer: 5/7

    2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7 of the pizza.

  10. There are 24 marbles in a bag and 1/3 of them are red. How many marbles are red?

    Answer: 8

    A third means one of 3 equal parts: 24 ÷ 3 = 8 red marbles.
