Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. Find the total of $24.85 and $16.70.

    Answer: $41.55

    $24.85 + $16.70 = $41.55.

  2. A jacket costs $67.85. How much change is there from $100?

    Answer: $32.15

    $100 − $67.85 = $32.15.

  3. A pen costs $2.45. How much do 12 such pens cost?

    Answer: $29.40

    12 × $2.45 = $29.40.

  4. $58.50 is shared equally among 6 children. How much does each child receive?

    Answer: $9.75

    $58.50 ÷ 6 = $9.75.

  5. Mrs Tan bought 3 books at $12.90 each and a pen for $4.50. How much did she spend altogether?

    Answer: $43.20

    3 × $12.90 = $38.70, then + $4.50 = $43.20.

  6. Round $36.72 to the nearest dollar.

    Answer: $37.00

$36.72 has 72 cents, which is past the halfway mark, so it rounds up to $37.00.

  7. Raj had $50. He spent $18.75 on Saturday and $22.60 on Sunday. How much money had he left?

    Answer: $8.65

    $18.75 + $22.60 = $41.35 spent, and $50 − $41.35 = $8.65.

  8. Notebooks cost $3.80 each. What is the greatest number of notebooks that can be bought with $50?

    Answer: 13

    $50 ÷ $3.80 = 13 with $0.60 left over, so 13 notebooks.

  9. Prawns cost $4.65 per kilogram. How much do 4 kilograms cost?

    Answer: $18.60

    4 × $4.65 = $18.60.

  10. Two brothers have $96 altogether. The older brother has $14 more than the younger. How much does the younger brother have?

    Answer: $41

    $96 − $14 = $82, which splits into two equal shares of $41.
