    Answer: 3480

    The ones digit is 6, so 3476 rounds up to 3480.

  2. Round 8 249 to the nearest 100.

    Answer: 8200

    The tens digit is 4, so 8249 rounds down to 8200.

  3. Round 26 500 to the nearest 1000.

    Answer: 27000

    The hundreds digit is 5, and a half rounds up, so 26500 becomes 27000.

  4. Estimate 4 812 + 3 195 by rounding each number to the nearest 1000.

    Answer: 8000

    4812 rounds to 5000 and 3195 rounds to 3000, so the estimate is 8000.

  5. Round $24.68 to the nearest dollar.

    Answer: $25.00

    68 cents is past halfway, so $24.68 rounds up to $25.00.

  6. A number rounded to the nearest 100 gives 4 300. Which of these could the number be?

    Answer: 4280

    Anything from 4250 to 4349 rounds to 4300, and 4280 is inside that range.

  7. Round 995 to the nearest 10.

    Answer: 1000

    995 rounds up, and the 9 tens roll over into a new thousand: 1000.

  8. Estimate 7 089 − 2 940 by rounding each number to the nearest 100.

    Answer: 4200

    7089 rounds to 7100 and 2940 rounds to 2900, so 7100 − 2900 = 4200.

  9. A stadium holds 18 630 people. Rounded to the nearest 1000, how many people is that?

    Answer: 19000

    The hundreds digit is 6, which is 5 or more, so 18630 rounds up to 19000.

  10. A pupil worked out 396 × 5 and wrote 1 480. Which estimate shows the answer must be wrong?

    Answer: 2000

    396 is close to 400, and 400 × 5 = 2000 — far from 1480, so the answer is wrong.
