Answers and explanations for all 10 questions

Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. Write 3 m 6 cm in metres.

    Answer: 3.06 m

    6 cm is 0.06 m, so 3 m 6 cm = 3.06 m.

  2. Write 2 kg 75 g in kilograms.

    Answer: 2.075 kg

    75 g is 0.075 kg, so 2 kg 75 g = 2.075 kg.

  3. A roll of tape is 450 cm long. 175 cm is used, then a further 60 cm. How much tape is left?

    Answer: 215 cm

    175 + 60 = 235 cm used, and 450 − 235 = 215 cm left.

  4. Each parcel has a mass of 1.25 kg. What is the total mass of 8 parcels?

    Answer: 10 kg

    8 × 1.25 kg = 10 kg.

  5. A tank held 12 ℓ of water. 4 ℓ 750 ml was poured out. How much water was left?

    Answer: 7 ℓ 250 ml

    12000 ml − 4750 ml = 7250 ml, which is 7 ℓ 250 ml.

  6. A rope 24 m long is cut into 16 equal pieces. How long is each piece?

    Answer: 150 cm

    24 m is 2400 cm, and 2400 ÷ 16 = 150 cm.

  7. Which of these masses is the heaviest?

    Answer: 3.5 kg

In grams they are 3500, 3050, 2950 and 3250, so 3.5 kg is the heaviest.

  8. A bottle holds 750 ml. How much juice is there in 12 such bottles?

    Answer: 9 ℓ

    12 × 750 ml = 9000 ml, which is 9 ℓ.

  9. 9 kg of rice is packed into bags of 1.5 kg. How many bags are filled?

    Answer: 6

    9 ÷ 1.5 = 6 bags.

  10. A shelf is 180 cm long. Each book is 25 mm thick. What is the greatest number of books that fit on the shelf?

    Answer: 72

    25 mm is 2.5 cm, and 180 ÷ 2.5 = 72 books.
