Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. A shop opened at 08 35 and closed at 14 20. How long was it open?

    Answer: 5 h 45 min

    08 35 to 14 00 is 5 h 25 min, then 20 min more: 5 h 45 min.

  2. A flight left at 21 45 and took 5 h 15 min. What time did it land?

    Answer: 03 00

    2 h 15 min takes it to midnight, then 3 h more: 03 00.

  3. How many seconds are there in 5 minutes?

    Answer: 300

    5 × 60 = 300 seconds.

  4. How many minutes are there in 2 1/2 hours?

    Answer: 150

    2 × 60 = 120, plus 30 for the half hour, giving 150 minutes.

  5. A journey started at 06 50 and took 2 h 35 min. What time did it end?

    Answer: 09 25

    2 h after 06 50 is 08 50, then 35 min more gives 09 25.

  6. How many days are there from 25 March to 5 April inclusive of both days?

    Answer: 12

25–31 March is 7 days, and 1–5 April is 5 days, giving 12 days in all.

  7. A car travels 150 km at 60 km/h. How long does the journey take?

    Answer: 2 h 30 min

    150 ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours, which is 2 h 30 min.

  8. Write 11.20 p.m. in 24-hour time.

    Answer: 23 20

    For p.m., add 12 to the hour: 11 + 12 = 23, giving 23 20.

  9. A meeting ran from 13 15 to 16 05. How long was it?

    Answer: 2 h 50 min

    13 15 to 16 00 is 2 h 45 min, then 5 min more: 2 h 50 min.

  10. 1 June is a Monday. What day of the week is 29 June?

    Answer: Monday

29 June is 28 days after 1 June, and 28 days is exactly 4 weeks, so it is a Monday too.
