Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. When y = 7, what is the value of 3y + 5?

    Answer: 26

    3y means 3 × 7 = 21, then 21 + 5 = 26.

  2. Ali has n stickers. Bala has 4 more than twice as many as Ali. How many does Bala have?

    Answer: 2n + 4

Twice as many is 2n, and 4 more than that is 2n + 4.

  3. Simplify 5a + 3a − 2a.

    Answer: 6a

    5 + 3 − 2 = 6, so the expression simplifies to 6a.

  4. If 4x = 36, what is x?

    Answer: 9

    36 ÷ 4 = 9, and 4 × 9 = 36.

  5. When m = 12, what is the value of 60 ÷ m + 8?

    Answer: 13

    60 ÷ 12 = 5, then 5 + 8 = 13.

  6. A pen costs $p. A book costs $3 more than the pen. What is the total cost of one pen and one book?

    Answer: 2p + 3

    The pen is p and the book is p + 3, so together they cost p + p + 3 = 2p + 3.

  7. Simplify 7k + 4 − 3k + 2.

    Answer: 4k + 6

    7k − 3k = 4k and 4 + 2 = 6, so the expression is 4k + 6.

  8. If 2y + 7 = 23, what is y?

    Answer: 8

    23 − 7 = 16, and 16 ÷ 2 = 8.

  9. A rectangle has length 2w cm and width w cm. What is its perimeter in terms of w?

    Answer: 6w

    Perimeter = 2w + w + 2w + w = 6w cm.

  10. When a = 5 and b = 3, what is the value of 2a − b?

    Answer: 7

    2 × 5 = 10, then 10 − 3 = 7.
