Find the average of 64, 81, 73, 90.
Answer: 77
64 + 81 + 73 + 90 = 308, and 308 ÷ 4 = 77.
The average of 7 numbers is 56. What is their total?
Answer: 392
Total = average × how many = 56 × 7 = 392.
After 4 tests Devi's average was 72. What must she score in the fifth test for her average to become 76?
Answer: 92
She needs 5 × 76 = 380 and has 4 × 72 = 288, so the fifth test needs 92.
12 pupils have an average height of 64 cm. Another 8 pupils have an average height of 72 cm. What is the average height of all 20 pupils?
Answer: 67.2 cm
Total height is 12 × 64 + 8 × 72 = 1344 cm, and 1344 ÷ 20 = 67.2 cm.
The average of 5 numbers is 48. When one of them, 60, is removed, what is the average of the remaining numbers?
Answer: 45
The five numbers total 240. Without 60 they total 180, and 180 ÷ 4 = 45.
A shop sold 18, 24, 21, 27, 20 books over five days. What was the average number sold per day?
Answer: 22
18 + 24 + 21 + 27 + 20 = 110, and 110 ÷ 5 = 22.
The average of 15, 18, 21, 24 and one more number is 20. What is the missing number?
Answer: 22
Five numbers averaging 20 total 100. The four given add to 78, so the missing number is 22.
Wei Ming scored an average of 40 in 3 games, then an average of 56 in the next 5 games. What is his average over all 8 games?
Answer: 50
Total points 3 × 40 + 5 × 56 = 400, and 400 ÷ 8 = 50.
Find the average of 17, 23, 29 and 19.
Answer: 22
17 + 23 + 29 + 19 = 88, and 88 ÷ 4 = 22.
The average of 6 numbers is 80. A seventh number, 45, is included. What is the new average?
Answer: 75
The six numbers total 480. With 45 they total 525, and that ÷ 7 = 75.
