Siti bought a book for $12.45 and a pencil case for $7.80. How much did she spend altogether?
Answer: $20.25
$12.45 + $7.80 = $20.25.
A notebook costs $3.40. How much do 6 such notebooks cost?
Answer: $20.40
6 × $3.40 = $20.40.
$54 is divided equally between 6 cousins. How much does each cousin get?
Answer: $9
$54 ÷ 6 = $9.
Erasers are sold at $4 each. Wei Ming has $35. What is the greatest number of erasers he can buy?
Answer: 8
$35 ÷ $4 = 8 with $3 left over, so he can buy 8.
Mrs Lee paid for a $36.75 toaster with a $50 note. How much change did she get?
Answer: $13.25
$50 − $36.75 = $13.25.
Raj bought 3 books at $8.50 each and one pen for $2.30. How much did he spend in all?
Answer: $27.80
3 × $8.50 = $25.50, then $25.50 + $2.30 = $27.80.
Priya's coin purse holds 5 twenty-cent coins and 3 ten-cent coins. How much is in the purse?
Answer: $1.30
5 × 20¢ = $1.00 and 3 × 10¢ = $0.30, so altogether $1.30.
A bakery sells buns at $3 each, with a "buy 3, get 1 free" offer. Mrs Rahim wants 24 buns. How much does she pay?
Answer: $54
Every 4 buns cost 3 × $3 = $9. 24 ÷ 4 = 6 groups, so 6 × $9 = $54.
Ali has $85. Bala has $37 more than Ali. How much do they have altogether?
Answer: $207
Bala has $85 + $37 = $122. Altogether: $85 + $122 = $207.
Meiling saves $15 every week. How much does she save in 9 weeks?
Answer: $135
9 × $15 = $135.
Mr Chua had $100. He bought 7 toys costing $12 each. How much money had he left?
Answer: $16
7 × $12 = $84. Then $100 − $84 = $16.
Which one of the following is the largest amount?
Answer: $9.50
All four are $9 and some cents, so compare the cents: 50¢ is the most, giving $9.50.
Rice costs $2.60 per kilogram. How much do 5 kilograms cost?
Answer: $13.00
5 × $2.60 = $13.00.
After spending $48, Nadia had $27 left. How much money did she have at first?
Answer: $75
She started with what she spent plus what remained: $48 + $27 = $75.
Ken and Lila have $96 altogether. Ken has $18 more than Lila. How much does Ken have?
Answer: $57
Take away the extra $18: $96 − $18 = $78, which splits into two equal shares of $39. Ken has $39 + $18 = $57.
A sweet costs 85¢ and a biscuit costs 65¢. How much do they cost together?
Answer: $1.50
85¢ + 65¢ = 150¢ = $1.50.
A cinema ticket costs $4.50. How much do 4 tickets cost?
Answer: $18.00
4 × $4.50 = $18.00.
Express $33.70 in cents.
Answer: 3370 cents
$1 = 100 cents, so $33.70 = 33 × 100 cents + 70 cents = 3370 cents.
