  1. A baker made 240 buns in the morning and sold 158 of them. In the afternoon he made 75 more. How many buns did he have then?

    Answer: 157

    240 − 158 = 82, then 82 + 75 = 157.

  2. There are 5 crates with 24 apples in each crate. 12 of the apples are rotten. How many good apples are there?

    Answer: 108

    5 × 24 = 120, then 120 − 12 = 108.

  3. A book has 200 pages. Sara reads 45 pages a day for 3 days. How many pages does she have left to read?

    Answer: 65

    45 × 3 = 135 pages read, and 200 − 135 = 65 left.

  4. 96 stickers are shared equally between 3 friends. How many stickers does each friend get?

    Answer: 32

    96 ÷ 3 = 32.

  5. A tank held 350 litres of water. 4 buckets of 25 litres each were taken out. How much water was left in the tank?

    Answer: 250

    4 × 25 = 100 litres removed, and 350 − 100 = 250 litres left.

  6. Tickets cost $6 each. Mr Rao bought 8 tickets and paid with a $50 note. How much change did he receive?

    Answer: $2

    8 × $6 = $48, and $50 − $48 = $2.

  7. A ribbon 4 m long is cut into 8 equal pieces. How long is each piece?

    Answer: 50 cm

    4 m is 400 cm, and 400 ÷ 8 = 50 cm for each piece.

  8. In a choir there are 12 girls. There are 4 times as many boys as girls. How many children are there in the choir altogether?

    Answer: 60

    Boys: 12 × 4 = 48. Altogether: 48 + 12 = 60.

  9. A number added to 235 gives 500. What is the number?

    Answer: 265

    500 − 235 = 265.

  10. Mei has 6 boxes with 8 pencils in each box. She gives away 2 boxes. How many pencils does she have left?

    Answer: 32

    She keeps 6 − 2 = 4 boxes, and 4 × 8 = 32 pencils.
