A table shows visitors: Friday 148, Saturday 236, Sunday 216. How many visitors came over the three days?
Answer: 600
148 + 236 + 216 = 600 visitors.
A table shows visitors: Friday 148, Saturday 236, Sunday 216. What was the average number of visitors per day?
Answer: 200
600 ÷ 3 = 200 visitors a day.
A pie chart of 80 votes shows: swimming 1/4, football 3/8, tennis 1/5, the rest basketball. How many votes did basketball get?
Answer: 14
1/4 + 3/8 + 1/5 = 10/40 + 15/40 + 8/40 = 33/40, so basketball is 7/40 of 80 = 14 votes.
A survey of 50 pupils shows: bus 20, walk 15, car 10, cycle 5. What percentage come by bus?
Answer: 40%
20 out of 50 is 20/50 = 2/5 = 40%.
A price table shows: adult $15, child $8, senior $11. What does a group of 3 adults and 4 children pay?
Answer: $77
3 × $15 = $45 and 4 × $8 = $32, so the group pays $77.
A table shows rainfall in mm: May 180, Jun 245, Jul 310, Aug 160. How much more rain fell in July than in August?
Answer: 150 mm
310 − 160 = 150 mm more.
A pie chart of a $240 bill shows: food 45%, drinks 25%, service the rest. How much was the service charge?
Answer: $72
100% − 45% − 25% = 30%, and 30% of $240 is $72.
A bus timetable shows departures at 14 05, 14 25, 14 50 and 15 10. A passenger arrives at 14 32. How long must he wait?
Answer: 18 min
The next bus is at 14 50, and from 14 32 to 14 50 is 18 minutes.
A table shows books borrowed: 6A 52, 6B 47, 6C ?, 6D 61. 220 books were borrowed altogether. How many did 6C borrow?
Answer: 60
52 + 47 + 61 = 160, and 220 − 160 = 60 books from 6C.
A table shows stamps: local 36, overseas 24. What is the ratio of local to overseas in its simplest form?
Answer: 3 : 2
Both 36 and 24 divide by 12, giving 3 : 2.
