A shopkeeper bought a kettle for $45 and sold it for $63. What was the profit?
Answer: $18
$63 − $45 = $18.
A bicycle is paid for with a deposit of $80 and 10 monthly instalments of $35. What is the total cost?
Answer: $430
10 × $35 = $350, plus the $80 deposit makes $430.
6 kg of salmon cost $46.80. What is the cost of 5 kg?
Answer: $39.00
$46.80 ÷ 6 = $7.80 per kg, and 5 × $7.80 = $39.00.
Hui Min had $84. She spent 1/3 of it on a bag and 1/4 of the remainder on lunch. How much did she have left?
Answer: $42
After the bag she has 2/3 × $84 = $56. Lunch takes 1/4 of that, leaving 3/4 × $56 = $42.
Mr Tan bought 4 pens at $1.85 each and paid with $100. How much change did he receive?
Answer: $92.60
4 × $1.85 = $7.40, and $100 − $7.40 = $92.60.
Notebooks cost $16.50 each. What is the greatest number that can be bought with $100?
Answer: 6
$100 ÷ $16.50 = 6 notebooks, with $1 left over.
$72 is shared between two brothers in the ratio 3 : 5. How much more does the older brother get?
Answer: $18
3 + 5 = 8 units, so 1 unit is $9 and the difference of 2 units is $18.
After spending 5/8 of her money, Siti had $24 left. How much did she have at first?
Answer: $64.00
She had 3/8 left, which is $24, so 1/8 is $8 and the whole amount is 8 × $8 = $64.00.
A trader bought a lamp for $50 and sold it at a 20% profit. What was the selling price?
Answer: $60
20% of $50 is $10, so the selling price is $60.
Rina bought 3 muffins at $4.50 each and 2 drinks at $2.75 each. She paid with $20. How much change did she get?
Answer: $1.00
3 × $4.50 + 2 × $2.75 = $19, and $20 − $19 = $1.00.
